What is the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth?

The Alliance is a program of the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Bureau of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DHFS/BMHSAS).

The Alliance’s purpose is to enhance and support the capacity of local Alliances (member coalitions) in their prevention and youth development work. Over 100 local coalitions are members of the Alliance.

Membership is diverse in that local Alliances may focus on a one or more of a variety of issues, such as substance abuse prevention or tobacco-free efforts, networking for youth-serving organizations, community youth development initiatives, family supports and strengthening.

Local Alliances consist of representatives of at least five (5) community sectors. Community sectors may include, but are not limited to:

 

Youth

Human Services

Parents

Public Health

Business Community

Continuing and Higher Education

Media
Law Enforcement and Justice

Healthcare professionals, including mental health and substance abuse

Schools (public and private)
Civic & Volunteer Groups

State, Local and/or Tribal government agencies

Youth-Serving Organizations 
Religious & Fraternal Organizations

Other organizations involved in reducing substance abuse



Benefits of Alliance membership:
  • Technical Assistance, training, consultation, and information and referral for: 1) building successful, sustainable community coalitions; 2) using evidence-based prevention and positive youth development strategies; and 3) developing prevention and youth development programs.
  • Opportunities to attend learning, sharing and networking events at low or reduced costs.
  • Opportunities to apply for competitive funding grants for coalition improvement and local public education programs, and for scholarships to prevention conferences.
  • Free access to the membership directories of the Wisconsin Community Papers and the Wisconsin Broadcaster’s Association.
  • Free access to national, state and regional information.
